At 2 p.m. when the theft was discovered the thief has already travelled 20 km. [40 kmph * 1/2 hr = 20 km].
Let the owner overtake the thief after x hrs from 2 p.m.
By x hrs later from 2 p.m. the thief has travelled 40x + 20 km and the owner has travelled 50x km.
Now the distance covered by both should be equal so:
40x + 20 = 50x
or, x = 20 / (50 - 40).
So, x = 2 hrs.
Therefore the owner will overtake the thief at 2 p.m. + 2 hrs = 4 p.m.

initial displacement is the displacement of the thief in 30 hrs. i.e. 40*(5/18)*30 .....(5/18 is the conversion of velocity kms/hr to mtr/s
Now relative velocity is (50-40)*(5/18)......i.e. 2.77mtr/s.
Now using the formula displacement= velocity*time ............ therefore time = 333.33/2.77 which results in 120 min i.e 2 hrs after 2 pm
