The vertical cross-section of a trench is a trapezium, measuring 5 m. across the top, 3 m across the bottom, depth of trench uniform 2.5 m; length of trench 20 m. Find the roughly how many litres of water the trench with hold. (1 litre = 1000 cc)

Solution

Area of trapezium = 1/2 * (3+5)*2.5 = 10 m^2
Volume of trench = 10*20 = 200 m^3 = 200*10^8 cm^3
= 2*10^8 cm^3
= 2*10^8 / 1000 = L
= 2*10^5 L

Area of trapezium * length of trench
(a+b) * 1/2* height * 20 m^3
(5+3) * 1/2 * 2.5 * 20 = 200 m^3 = 2*10^5 L

Area of the trench = 1/2*(a+b)*h
=1/2*(3+5)*2.5=10
volume= area* length=10*20=200 metre^3
= 2*10^2 meter^3
1 metre^3= 1000 litre= 10^3 litre
thus volume= 2*20^2*10^3 litre
= 2*10^5 litre

Area of trapezium = 0.5 * (a +b) * h
= 0.5 * (5 + 3) * 2.5
= 10 cm^2
volume = area * length of trench
= 10 * 20
= 200 mc = 200 * 1000 cc

Volume of Trapezium=area of Trapezium*length
=[1/2(sum of 2 Parallel sides)*depth]*length
=[1/2(5+3)*2.5]*20
=200m^3 (1m^3=1000 L)

area of trapezium is 10 m^3 and volume is 200 m^3.
converting to litres the total litre is 200,000,000cc=200,000L
which is 2x10^5

L*H*(A+B)/2

=200 m^3=2*10^8cm^3

now 1L=10^3cm3

2*10^8cm^3=2*10^5L

volume= 10*20 = 200 m^3.
