The present ages of two persons differ by 16 years. 3 years ago, the elder one was 3 times as old as the younger one. What is the present age of the elder person?

Solution

Let the present age of elder one be x and younger one be y
So x-y = 16 ----(i)

(x-3) =3(y-3)
=> x = 3y - 6

Putting x value in (i)
3y - 6 - y = 16
=>2y = 22
=> y = 11
and x = 11+ 16 = 27
Hence Option 10)

Let their ages 3 years back = x,3x
Their Present ages are =x+3,3x+3
Difference of ages = 3x+3-x-3=2x=16

Present age of elder one = 3x+3=3*8+3=27
