A father said to his son, "I was as old as you are at the present at the time of your birth". If the father's age is 55 years now, what would be the son's age 4.5 years later?

Solution

Let the sons current age be x
So fathers age x years back when son was born => 55-x = x
Solving we get x = 27.5
4.5 Years later son's age = 27.5 + 4.5 = 32 years

2x=55=>x=27.5
After 4.5 years son's age is=27.5+4.5=32y

from the condition, x=y
at the time of son's birth,
x+y=55 (father's age)
as x=y,
2y=55
y=27.5 (son's present age)
after 4.5 years,
y+4.5
=27.5+4.5
=32 years

Then if 2x=55,then x = 27.5.
->x=55-27.5, then x=27.5
