A permutation is often represented by the cycles it has. For example, if we permute the
numbers in the natural order to 2 3 1 5 4, this is represented as (1 3 2) (5 4). In this the
(132) says that the first number has gone to the position 3, the third number has gone to
the position 2, and the second number has gone to position 1, and (5 4) means that the
fifth number has gone to position 4 and the fourth number has gone to position 5. The
numbers with brackets are to be read cyclically.
If a number has not changed position, it is kept as a single cycle. Thus 5 2 1 3 4 is
represented as (1345)(2).
We may apply permutations on itself If we apply the permutation (132)(54) once, we get
2 3 1 5 4. If we apply it again, we get 3 1 2 4 5 , or (1 2 3)(4) (5)
If we consider the permutation of 7 numbers (1457)(263), what is its order (how many
times must it be applied before the numbers appear in their original order)?
a. 12
b. 7
c. 7! (factorial of 7)
d. 14

Find the number of six-digit numbers that can be formed with the digits 1, 2, 3, and 4, if all the digits are to appear at least once?

single digit 3 times repeated => 111234 , 222134, 333124, 444123 => 4* 6!/3! = 480

2 differ digit 2 times repeated => 112234,..............., such 6 types => 6* 6!/ 2!*2! = 1080

total = 480 + 1080 = 1560

is it right ?

hi rakesh ,can u explain how 6!/3! came?
Like? Yes | No
llamar   10 years ago
first we have to select extra two numbers to form six digits
so, no ways select two numbers from 1,2,3,4 is 4C2=6
no of ways we can arrange six digits in six places is 6! but out of two of the repeated
so 6!/2!
so total no of six digits possible is 6*(6!/2!)=3*720=2160

An engineer decide to complete a work in 20 day and hired sixty men,after working for five days,he realize that,only 1/5th of the work is completed.if he wants to complete the work as he planned,how many more men he has to hire

in first 5 days work done=60*5=300 mandays=1/5 of work ie 20% work done in 5 days
work left=80% and it is done by 1200 mandays.
since 15 days are left to complete the work,so 1200/15=80 men ie he needs 20 men more because 60 men are already working.... :)

total work should be done in 20 days =1200(60*20)
work done by 60 men in first 5 days=300(60*5)= 1/5 of work
now 15 days are lift to complete the work so,1days work=1/15 and 1200 men complete the work =1200/15=80 men so,20 more men are required (i.e 80-60=20)

12e - 7hr - 1w
12e - 3hr - 3/7w.
also, 1e - 1hr - 1/(7*12)w.
3/7w+11/84w+10/84w+9/84w+8/84w+7/84w=81/84w completed up to 6p.m.
now, remaining 3/84w=1/28w will be completed by remaining 6e in
1e - 1hr - 1/84w
6e - 1hr - 1/14w
6e - 1/28w - 1/2hr.
hence, work will be completed by 6.30pm or in 17/2hr.

Total=12e-7hr=12*7=84 units
-----------------------------------------
completed work is10-1pm is=3hr,
so 12*3=36 units
Remaining is=84-36=48 units
------------------------------------------
1-2pm=11
2-3pm=10,
3-4pm=9,
4-5pm=8,
5-6pm=7,
6-7pm=6.....
we need to reach 48 units of work..
11+10+9+8+7=45,
now 3 more is extra day remaining next =6hr ....3/6=1/2=30min
so ans is=6:30 mins
