Professor absentminded has a very peculiar problem, in that he cannot remember numbers larger than 15. However, he tells his wife, I can remember any number up to 100 by remembering the three numbers obtained as remainders when the number is divided by 3, 5 and 7 respectively. For example (2,2,3) is 17. Professor remembers that he had (1,1,6) rupees in the purse, and he paid (2,0,6) rupees to the servant. How much money is left in the purse?
option
A. 59
B. 61
C. 49
D. 56
can u pls explain answer for dis qn...
how do u find that 76????????????

take the highest num ie. 7 We get reminder 6 for..... 13,20,27,34,41,48,55,62,69,76,83,... ..match this list with 5 we get ,reminder 1 only for 41,76 ..now u can see easily that value ur finding is 76 ..similarly u'l get 20 and answer is 76-20 = 56

@ SARANYA
i dont know the correct procedure but i got the answer by a process
it might be helpful to u
LET THE AMOUNT HE HAD BE X
IN THE QUESTION IT IS GIVEN THAT WHEN X IS DIVIDED BY 3,5,7 LEAVES REMAINDERS 1,1,6
LETS TAKE THE LAST NUMBER I.E 7
X%7=6...I.E THE NUM IS 7Y+6
POSSIBLE VALUES OF Y ARE FROM 1 TO 13
THEN X MAY BE FROM 13,20,27,....76,83,90,97
THEN DIVIDE THE ABOVE NUMS BY 3 AND 5 THE NUM WHICH LEAVES REMAINDERS 1,1 IS THE REQUIRED NUM
this might look like a big process but you can calculate the num in your mind.
HOPE THIS IS HELPFUL
THANK U

@saranya
,since we are getting the same remainder when divided by 7 before & after,the amount left must be a multiple of 7.so from options,check for reaining conditions...

sangeetha   12 years ago
ur question is wrong.that is 20 like none..
so by union and intersection formula,
n(A ∪B) = P(A) +P(B)−P(A ∩B)
n(A∪B)=total no.of people -no. of people who like none=38-20=18
so,substituting,18=10+15-X
X=7

the formula is n(A union B)=n(A)+n(B)-n(A intersection B)

18=10+15-X;
here what is the formula that is being used??
38-20=18(whether this Aunion B or A intersection B)
p(A)+P(B)-x=18
here what is 18 and x?please clear this doubt
