(#M40002601) SELF QUESTION Keep an EYE Keep an eye puzzle Keep an eye puzzle

Alice and Bob play the following coins-on-a-stack game. 20 coins are stacked one above the other. One of them is a special (gold) coin and the rest are ordinary coins. The goal is to bring the gold coin tothe top by repeatedly moving the topmost coin to another position in the stack.Alice starts and the players take turns. A turn consists of moving the coin on the top to a position i belowthe top coin (0 = i = 20). We will call this an i-move (thus a 0-move implies doing nothing). The provisois that an i-move cannot be repeated; for example once a player makes a 2-move, on subsequent turnsneither player can make a 2-move. If the gold coin happens to be on top when it's a player's turn thenthe player wins the game. Initially, the gold coinis the third coin from the top. Then find the valid game between alice and bob.
a) In order to win, Alice's first move should be a 1-move.
b) In order to win, Alice's first move should be a 0-move.
c) In order to win, Alice's first move can be a 0-move or a 1-move.
d) Alice has no winning strategy.

Solution
(b)In order to win, Alice's first move should be a 1-move....
reason:there are two possibility after 1- move by Alice:-
1. when bob takes 0-move....then the coin config is same ..... but now alice can neither take 1-move nor 0-move.... so she has to take 2 or greater move(let it be 2 move)............
now we have only one coin above the gold coin......now bob can neither take 1-move nor 0-move nor 2-move.... so she has to take 3 or greater move.......
but the move greater then 2-move brings gold coin on top....makes alice win...

2.now bob takes 2-move after alice's first move....... now thre is only one coin above the gold coin..... so Alice takes 0-move........now we have only one coin above the gold coin......now bob can neither take 1-move nor 0-move nor 2-move.... so she has to take 3 or greater move.......
but the move greater then 2-move brings gold coin on top....makes alice win...

How many 9 digit numbers are possible by using the digits 1,2,3,4,5 which are divisible by 4 if therepetition is allowed?
a)5^7 b)5^6 c)5^9 d)5^8

Solution
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (9 digit number)
Digits that can be used = 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
For a number to divisible by 4, the last two digits have to be divisible by 4
So, the units digit cannot be 1, 3 or 5
If the units digit is 2, only 12, 32 adn 52 are acceptable as the last two digits
If the units digit is 4, only 24 and 44 are acceptable as the last two digits.
So, total 5 cases 12,24,32,44,52 are possible for the last two digits.
Now, the first 7 digits of the 9 digit number can be filled in 5^7 ways as each place can be filled by 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5.
So, desired answer = 5^7*5 = 5^8

Paul the octopus who has been forecasting the outcome of FIFA world cup matches with tremendous accuracy has now been invited to predict ICC world cup matches in 2011. We will assume that the world cup contenders have been divided into 2 groups of 9 teams each. Each team in a group plays the other teams in the group. The top two teams from each group enter the semi finals (after which the winner is decided by knockout). However, Paul has a soft spot for India and when India plays any team, Paul always backs India. Alas, his predictions on matches involving India are right only 2 out of 3 times. In order to qualify for the semi finals, it is sufficient for India to win 7 of its group matches. What is the probability that India will win the ICC world cup?
