ans is 4

1/z=1/12+1/y
z=1/(1/12+1/y)

z(max)=1/(1/12+1/infinity)=12
z(min)=1/(1/12+1/0)=0

so range of z varies from 0 to 12 for positive integral value of y

y=1/(1/z-1/12)

now substituting z=1,2.3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 in above equation we can easily conclude that y is a positive integer only when z=3,4,6,8

thus there are only 4 possible values of y & z according to given condition

17 kg can be split into 15kg + 2kg

5kg costs 110 rs so 15kg costs 330rs -------->(1)
1kg costs 25 rs so 2kg costs 50rs -------->(2)
adding 1 and 2 = Rs.380

for 25+13=32

25-->5-2=3....A
13-->3-1=2....B
32-->3-2=1....C

ie =>A-B=C =>3-2=1;

for 70+26=30

70-->7-0=7....D
26-->6-2=4....E
30-->3-0=3....F

ie D-E=F =>7-4=3;

now final 26+13=?

26-->6-2=4;
13-->3-1=2;
?...it must be 4-2=2;

now 20-->2-0=2;
and 24-->4-2=2;

but answer will be 20.
because eqn.C=> 32-->left - right=1;

eqn.F=> 30-->left-right=3;

so answer is 20-->left-right=2;

I gave TCS interview on 19th Dec, and in response i got a mail from "careers@tcs.com"

speed of faster boat=a
speed of slower boat=b
speed of stream=x
time= dist/speed
downstream,
1.5*d/(a+x) = d/(b+x)
since speed of a downstream= a+x
and of b = b+x
on solving u get,
3(b+x)=2(a+x).. eq 1

upstream,
speed of a= a-x
speed of b= b-x
d/(a-x)=d/(2*(b-x))
on solving u get,
a-x=2(b-x).. eq 2

distance = speed * time
1*(a-b)=8
a=8+b.. eq 3

put a=8+b in eq 1
u get,
b=16-x
put this value of b in eq 2
u get x=4, b=12, a=20
Answer is 20 which is speed of faster boat :)

HI , can u solve this for me
7.Two boats go downstream from point X to point Y. The faster boat covers the distance from X to Y 1.5 times as fast as the slower boat. It is known that for every hour the slower boat lags behind the faster boat by 8 km. However, if they go upstream, then the faster boat covers the distance from Y to X in half the time as the slower boat. Find the speed of the faster boat in still water.
