100 students appeared for two examination. 60 passed the first, 50 passed the second and 30 passed the both. Find the probability that a student selected at random had failed in both the examination?

(A) 1/5 (B) 1/7 (C) 5/7 (D) 5/6
Reply Like? Yes (1) | No (2)
Devendra Marghade   2 years ago
Number of passed only in 1st = 60-30 = 30
Number of passed only in 2nd = 50-30 = 20
Total passed atleast in one exam = 30 + 20 + 30 = 80
Total failed in both = 100 - 80 = 20
Therefore required probability = 20/100 = 1/5

Both failed =100-(60+50-30)=20
Probability=20/100=1/5

Two friends decide to get together; so they start riding bikes towards each other. They plan to meet halfway. Each is riding at 6 MPH. They live 36 miles apart. One of them has a pet carrier pigeon and it starts flying the instant the friends start traveling. The pigeon flies back and forth at 18 MPH between the 2 friends until the friends meet.
How many miles does the pigeon travel
Like? Yes | No (1)
Devendra Marghade   3 years ago
Ans: 54 miles

Let two friends are A and B, who lives 36 miles apart.
Case-I (Pigeon first flies from B towards A)
Relative speed of Pigeon and A = 18+6 = 24 mph. Time of meeting Pigeon and A=36/24=3/2 hr.
In time 3/2 hrs, distance traveled by A & B=2*6*3/2=18 miles, Remaining distance=36-18=18 miles.
Case-II (Pigeon then flies from A towards B)
Relative speed of Pigeon and B = 18+6 = 24 mph. Time of meeting Pigeon and B=18/24=3/4 hr.
In time 3/4 hrs, distance traveled by A & B=2*6*3/4=9 miles, Remaining distance=18-9=9 miles.
Case-III (Pigeon first flies from B towards A)
Relative speed of Pigeon and A = 18+6 = 24 mph. Time of meeting Pigeon and A=9/24=3/8 hr.
In time 3/8 hrs, distance traveled by A & B=2*6*3/8=9/2 miles, Remaining distance=9 - 9/2=9/2 miles.
Case-IV (Pigeon then flies from A towards B)
Relative speed of Pigeon and B = 18+6 = 24 mph. Time of meeting Pigeon and B=(9/2)/24=3/16 hr.
In time 3/16 hrs, distance traveled by A & B=2*6*3/16=9/4 miles, Remaining distance=(9/2)-(9/4)=9/4 miles.

Thus Pigeon we fly between A and B, for 3/2, 3/4, 3/8, 3/16, ..... hrs (which forms series) until both the friends meets. Therefore total distance traveled by Pigeon=18*(3/2 + 3/4 + 3/8 + 3/16 + ......)=18*3*(~1)=54 miles.

There are 50 employees in a Max. Mink Co. The salaries of 15 of them were each decreased by 10%, and the salary of the rest were each decreased by 5%. Find the percentage decrease in the total salary of the employees.

Devendra Marghade   3 years ago
Let initial salary of each employee be 1.
Total decrease in salary = 50 - [(15*0.9) + (35*0.95)] = 3.25
% Decrease in total salary = (3.25/50)*100 = 6.5%

Let ₹100 is the salary of each
15 persons decrease by 10%=> salary =₹90
35 persons salary decreased by 5%=> salary =₹95
Total salary =15*90+35*95=₹1350+₹3325
=₹4675
Less by₹325=>%of less =(325/5000)100
325/50=13/2=>6.5%
