Today's puzzle(18.11.2015), Admin's answer is wrong. rate of dividend is 5% but in admin's solution rate of dividend is taken as 5.5%
Question:
Find the income derived from 44 shares of Rs.25 each at 5 premium (brokerage 1/4 per share), the rate of dividend being 5%. Mainly find the rate of interest on the investment.
Actual answer:
c.p of 1 share=(25+5+1/4)=30.25
c.p of 44 share=44*30.25=1331
face value of 44 share=44*25=1100
now
income derived for 5% dividend=(5/100)*1100=55
rate of interest=(55/1331)*100=4.132%
answer is 4.132%
therefore option 10:none of these is correct

The TCS Ignite Open Lab – Algorithms
The Challenge
In this challenge, you will write algorithms to solve two problems.
The Interviewer Candidate Problem
Refer to the diagram above. It is a walk-in-interview setup having an interview room with
one chair and a waiting room with a number of chairs. The interviewer interviews
candidates in the interview room. When the interviewer finishes interviewing a candidate,
he dismisses the candidate and goes to the waiting room to see if there are other
candidates waiting. If there are, he brings one of them to his room and interviews him. If
there are no candidates waiting, he returns to his chair in the interview room and
continues reading his last unfinished magazine. If there are no unfinished magazines, he
starts reading a new magazine. After he finishes reading one full magazine, he goes to
sleep.
Each candidate, when he arrives, looks to see what the interviewer is doing. If the
interviewer is reading a magazine, the candidate waits for the interviewer to finish
reading the current page of the magazine. Then the candidate enters the interview room
and asks the interviewer to interview him. If the interviewer is sleeping, the candidate
wakes him up and then asks the interviewer to interview him. If the interviewer is
interviewing another candidate, the candidate goes to the waiting room. If there is a free
chair in the waiting room, the candidate sits in it and waits his turn. If there is no free
chair, then the candidate leaves.
Based on a naive analysis, the above description should ensure that the walk-ininterview
functions correctly, with the interviewer interviewing any candidate who arrives
until there are no more candidates, and then reading magazines and/or sleeping until the
next candidate arrives. In practice, there are a number of problems that can occur that
are illustrative of general scheduling problems. Please discuss those problems and
provide an algorithm to solve those problems.
Note: There are two doors between the interview room and the waiting room.
Tip: Read literature on the Dining Philosophers problem
Satyaaki and Yudhistra’s problem
Imagine that two divisions of the Pandava army are camped outside an enemy camp of
Kauravas commanded by Bhishma. Each division is commanded by its own general;
Saatyaki and Yudhishtra. The two generals can communicate with one another only by
messengers, who might get caught by the Kauravas. After observing the Kaurava camp,
Saatyaki and Yudhistra must each decide independently whether to attack the Kauravas
or not. Then they must each communicate their plan to the other through messengers.
Upon receiving a message from the other, both Saatyaki and Yudhistra must decide a
common plan of action. The Pandavas can succeed only when both Saatyaki and
Yudhishtra attack the Kaurava camp at the same time.
Discuss the above problem in detail and provide a solution to the same. Your
submission must not exceed 4 pages and should either be in .txt, .doc or .pdf format.

Nowadays M4maths website especially Todays' Puzzle section is taking a lot of time to load/refresh. In this section, I cannot select the right option at one go. Also I can't change the option at times. I am also unable to click on Answer Reason box and type the explanation using keyboard at one go. I have to refresh the page at least 4-5 times to perform any kind of task. The server is also very slow. Even on my high speed BSNL broadband connection, it is taking 30 seconds to 1 minute to load a complete page. By the time, the clock is ticking and there is always delay while submitting my answer. All these issues are happening for quite a sometime now, possibly for past 1 week or so if I am not wrong. Please admin sir, try to fix these problems at the earliest. Thanks.

44 Kg.

If quantity of coffee sold=x kg. @ Rs.22/Kg, then total Selling Price=22x
As at price of 22x, Gain=10%, So Cost price=22x*100/110=20x
Here gain=22x-20x=2x=88, x=44

Devendra Marghade   10 years ago
c. 72 cm
If length of the body=x cm, then length of the tail=12+(x/3) also given length of the head=12 cm and
length of the body=length of head+tail, so x=12+12+(x/3), x=36
So total length of the fish=Length (head+body+tail)=12+36+24=72 cm

d. 20
If biscuits eaten on 1st day=x, then on biscuits eaten on successive 5 days are x, (x+6), (x+12), (x+18), (x+24) which totals=5x+60=160, x=20

subsidiariesies of tata sons consist of Tcs, Tata indicom and Tata steel and the ratio of the turnover between them are in the ratio of 4:3:5 in the year 2000 and their expenditure are in the ratio of 8:1:7 Tcs and Tata steel earns profit of 90 crore &120 crore in the year then what is the ratio of profits of 3 companies?
Like? Yes (1) | No
Reply

MOJUMDER   10 years ago
Let business turnover of those 3 companies are 4x, 3x and 5x and their expenditure are 8y, y and 7y respectively.
Now, 4x - 8y = 90 and 5x - 7 y = 120.
Solving we get, y = 5/2 and x = 55/2.
Hence, ratio of profits of 3 companies is (110 - 20) : (165/2 - 5/2) : (275/2 - 35/2) = 9:8:12.

Md Nadeem Showkat   9 years ago
the ans of first question is 72cm. the solution is as follow.
let the body of fish is x cm.
than, h=12
tail= 12 + 1/3 of x

a/q : body = head + tail

x = 12 + 12 + 1/3x
by solving this we get x = 36cm
tail = 12 + 1/3 of 36 =24cm
head = 12
total length of fish = 24 + 12 + 36 = 72

2. let the biscuits eaten by dog at first day be x
so a/q the number of biscuits eaten by dog in 5 days are = x+ (x+6) + (x +12) +(x+18)+ (x =24) = 5x + 60

as per question ; 5x + 60 =160
5x = 100
x = 20
so the biscuits eaten by dog at first day is 20

arun travelled half of his distcane in 2 hrs with the speed of 60kmph..
therefore there distance travelled by him is = 2 * 60 = 120km
total distance =240km
rest distance is 120km
he has to reached by 4pm as he has covered his half distance by 1
rest time = 3hrs (1 pm - 4pm)
speed = 120/3 = 40 kmph

2.
let the first travelled xkm
2nd train travelled (x -240)km
a/q
the train gonna meet so the equation should be transformed into time parameters
x/60 = x-240/50
50x = 60x - 14400
10x =14400
x = 1440

Hi admin,

In the previous puzzle, I think the answer should be 12 because the term "difference" signifies the symbol ~, might not always be -. So the solution should be like this.

The digits have to be 1, 2, 3, and 4; and the tens and hundreds digits
must differ by 1. So

(1) there are three different possible combinations for the tens and
hundreds digits: 1 and 2, 2 and 3, or 3 and 4;
(2) in each of those combinations the two digits can be in either
order; and
(3) for each ordered pair of tens and hundreds digit, the remaining
two digits can be in either order.

So the total number of possibilities for the number is

(3) * (2) * (2) = 12. Option 7) 12 should be the right answer, isn't it, sir?

Yes, the answer should be 12, as per the given condition of 4 digits(1,2,3,4), the difference between tens and hundreds digit is 1, so combinations can be
(1234) (1324) (4231) (4321) (2341) (2431) (1342) (1432) (3124) (3214) (4123) (4213)

ans should be 350.

according to my obeserbvation i transformed this eq in this way:
1*1*1 + 1 = 2
2*2*2+ 2= 10
3*3*3 + 3 = 30
4*4*4 + 4 = 68
5*5*5 + 5 = 130
6*6*6 + 6 = 222
7*7*7 +7 = 350

Like? Yes (2) | No
Md Nadeem Showkat   9 years ago
the amount is paid 5544
amount after 1st year at 12% = 5040.
for the next year
504o is the principal amount
net interest = 5544-5040 = 504

so 504 = 5040 ( 1 + r /100)
504 * 100 = 5040 +5040r
5040 r = 50400-5040
5040r = 43560
r = 43560/5040
r = 9

A,B and C can do work in 7,14 and 21 days respectively.They completed the work and got Rs.242.What is share of C ?
Like? Yes (1) | No
Reply

Devendra Marghade   10 years ago
44 Rs.

Ratio of work done by A, B & C =(1/7) : (1/14) : (1/21)= 6 : 3 : 2
So share of C in Rs. 242 = 242*2/(6+3+2)= 44
Like? Yes (3) | No
Md Nadeem Showkat   9 years ago
The ratio of their working rates = 1/7 : 1/14 : 1/21 = 6 : 3 : 2.
Since, they work together, the share of C
= 2/11 * 242 = Rs.44

5. ABC visited his cousin - XYZ’s place. In the mornings, both would go for a jog. The evenings were spent on the tennis court. Tiring as these activities were, both could manage only one per day, i.e., either both went for a jog or played tennis each day. There were days when both felt lazy and stayed home all day long. Now, there were 10 mornings when they did nothing, 12 evenings when they stayed at home, and a total of 10 days when they jogged or played tennis. For how many days did ABC stay at XYZ’s place?
Like? Yes (3) | No

MOJUMDER   10 years ago
tennis + leave = 10.
jog + leave = 12.
Hence, jog - tennis = 2.
Again given, jog + tennis = 10.
Hence, jog = 6, tennis = 4, leave = 6. Total days = 6 + 4 + 6 = 16.

2x + 2y = 40. i.e. x + y = 20.
Again, (40 - 2x)/x - (40 - 2y)/y = 15/2. i.e. 1/x - 1/y = 3/16.
Solving, we get the desired answer.

1/x - 1/y = 2/96 = 1/48.
Abhishek was travelling at a speed of 1/(1/4) = 4 km more than that of his planned/intended speed.
Hence, y = x + 4.
Solving, we get x = 12, y = 16.
