I think Admin has accepted both option 1 and option 5 as correct for puzzle dtd 14.04.2014 which is not fair.
Only option 1 should be acceptable as correct.

Dipin is definitely right but you should be prepared to accept the 'logic' of so called intellectuals who have their own mindset.
Every body knows that
Sqrt (25) = +- 5 and not only +5.
If we consider
Sqrt (25) = - 5, then x=4 should also be wrong.

Such mistakes are common at this site. That is why I did not answer yesterday's puzzle. All the best for next puzzle.

Dear admin,
please check solution for puzzle dtd 15/4/14..

Sqrt(2x^2-2x+1)-2x+3 = 0
or 2x^2-2x+1=(2x-3)^2
or x^2-5x+4=0
or x = 1,4

please note that x=1 also satisfies the equation as sqrt (1) = +/-1
So when we consider sqrt 1 = -1 ,
we get
LHS=RHS

so correct ans is option 1 when x=1,4
Please do not make fun of Maths at this prestigious site.

Dear admin, please check solution for today's puzzle.

Sqrt(2x^2-2x+1)-2x+3 = 0
=> 2x^2-2x+1=(2x-3)^2
=> x^2-5x+4=0
=> x = 1,4

please note that x=1 also satisfies the equation as sqrt (1) = +/-1
So when we consider sqrt 1 = -1 it satisfies the condition. Hence ans should be x=1,4.. option 1

1. One pipe fills in 4 hrs and another in 5hrs when they both work alternately
how much time will be taken to fill the tank.

another pipe part filled in 1 hr =1/5
part filled in 1 hr together =1/4+1/5=9/20
total time taken to fill =20/9

4.4 hours...
1st pipe,in 1 hr,fills=1/4 th part
2nd pipe in 1h fills =1/5th part
Since they work alternately,in 2 hrs 2 pipes fill =1/4+1/5=9/20th part..
Part Remaining= 1-(9/20) = 11/20
Working alternately in 2 hrs both pipes fill 9/20th part.So in 4HRS both will fill 18/20th part[working alternately).Again Part remaining = 1-{18/20) == 2/20th part.
Now its 1st pipe's turn
1 Hr -->> (1/4)th part
X Hr -->> (2/20)th part
so X = 2/5 hrs = 0.4 hrs... Total Time = 4.4 Hrs or 4 2/5 Hrs

after 5 years their ages will be 9x+5 and 8x+5
ratio is 10:9
(9x+5)/(8x+5) = 10/9
we will get x=5
subtitute the values
9x=9*5=45
8x=8*5=40
difference 45-40=5
