cucumber]
Weight of water = 100*99/100 = 99 pounds
Weight of solid part = 100-99 = 1 pound
If water content evaporates , weight of solid part remains same only... bcozzz water only ll get evaporated...
So weight of solid part = 1 pound
Let the new total weight(solid part+water) of cucumber be "x"
Weight of water is
x*98/100 = x-1 [since (x-1) is the weight of water...water weight=total weight-solid part weight... ie x-1]
98x = 100x-100
2x = 100
x = 50 pounds

So the new weight of cucumber = 50 pounds [98% water, 1%solid part]

Hello Admin,
I was one of the top 5 solvers of 17/04/2014 M4Maths puzzle. But the problem is I got 18 points credited to my profile but my M4maths score wasn't changed from 77.I seemed to have not got the points on my M4Maths score. Please see if there is any problem.

There was some controversy in the 15th April puzzle. After discussing it with top maths professors the final result is that only option 5 is correct.

But all those users who answered with option 1 have been given the marks as well.

Below is the rule to understand square root problems. Please use the logic explained in the image below to solve this type of question in your exam but if user wants to go with their logic then it will be his/her choice. Our Moto is to give you a right answer for every question asked on our website.

X^2 = 25
X = -√25
X = +√25
But √25 is always 5
And X can be
X = +5
X = -5

I think answer is only 1, not -11

Principle square root is sometimes called the positive square root.

I think admin is correct.

If u r a student of 8th standard, then this logic may be correct.But for normal mathematical calculations, u will have to consider both roots.
If this logic is accepted then solution of ax^2+bx+c=0
will be
x= (-b+root(b^2-4ac))/2a only
and
not
x= (-b +/- root(b^2-4ac))/2a.
you may not give marks but pls do not give illogical reasoning.

Can you please give the names and contact numbers of ' top maths professors' who justified that the final result is that only 'option 5' is correct? I do not think any mathematician can justify this logic.

Dear Admin,
I think your logic will be harmful for the students/ members of this site as no mathematics teacher will agree with this logic.Please use this site for creating interest for maths and not to justify mistakes with such reasoning.
Every one knows
Sq root (x^2) =+/- x
and same logic is applicable in every situation.
This logic is applied only when u are getting non integer values for men/ boys/labor or -ve values for number of days/amount in some questions. There is no such situation here. Please read the question and apply mind while putting values in LHS and RHS and check whether u get LHS=RHS or not. Positive sq root may be principal sq root bit not only sq root.

The solution to 15th april puzzle has 2 roots
x = 1,4
from this x = 1 is an extraneous solution.
an extraneous solution represents a solution, such as that to an equation, that emerges from the process of solving the problem but is not a valid solution to the original problem.
