Susan made a block with small cubes of 8 cubic cm volume to make a block ,3 small cubes long, 9 small cubes wide and 5 small cubes deep. She realizes that she has used more small cubes than she really needed. She realized that she could have glued a fewer number of cubes together to lock like a block with same dimensions, if it were made hollow. What is the minimum number of cubes that she needs to make the block?

a car can travel the distance between the station and the post office which are 1.2km apart in 1.8 minutes.how much faster must it travel to do the distance in 1.5minutes.

speed is inversely proportion to time taken .
s(fast)/s(slow) = time(slow)/time (fast)= 1.8/1,5 = 6/5

so new speed should be 1.2 times slow speed.
so 20% faster than initial speed.

For divisibility by 6 ,last digit can be 2 or 4 only.

Age of 2 in d ratio 4:5. Total of 2 ages is 55. Aftr 2 yrs age in ratio 5:7 ages then find its its present age.

I think given data about ratio of ages after 2 years is wrong.

the ratio should increase and approach towards 1 with time.

pls check.

otherwise with first condition,

Age of 2 in d ratio 4:5. Total of 2 ages is 55.
4x+5x= 55
x= 55/9 yrs
ages are 4*55/9 and 5*55/9 years.

@ Anand,

solution given by Garima ( in placement puzzles)seems correct.

Mark coins ABCDEFGHIJKL
First weighing:-

put ABCD on one side and EFGH on other side of balance.

If equal, then 3rd group, IJKL has the odd coin which can be easily found in next 2 weighings.

If ABCD > EFGH,

it means either one of ABCD is heavier or one of EFGH is lighter.

2nd weighing:-
Put ABE in one Pan and CDF in other pan.

If equal, one of GH is lighter which can be found in 3rd weighing.
If ABE>CDF, then either one of AB is heavier or F is lighter which can be found in 3rd weighing by placing A on one side and B on other side.

A nice puzzle

A B C D want to get across a lake 312 miles across.
Swimming speeds in mph: A=4 B=8 C=12 D=16
They have a motorboat that goes at 48mph but this boat can only take 2 persons.
D leaves first; 2 hours later the other 3 leave.
During the last hour, a strong salmon decides to push the boat. This causes the boat to go 72mph during the last hour.
All 4 arrive on other side at same time, 16 hours after D left.
How many miles did the boat travel?
For how many hours did A swim?
How many miles did C swim?
How many hours was B in the boat?

First of all D left for swimming @ 16 mph.
For 15 hours he swam (15*16= 240 miles) and went by boat for last 1 hr (72 miles).
C starts swimming @ 12 mph after 2 hrs.
Also A and B leave by Boat for 5 hrs ( covered 48*5= 240 miles).B swam further for 9 hrs to cover 9*8=72 miles, total 312 miles.
A came back by boat for 3 hrs and catches C who has covered 8*12=96 miles.
For next 4 hrs, A and C covered 4*48= 192 miles and reached 96+192=288 miles point from start. C starts swimming again for 2 hrs and covered balance 24 miles.
A comes back for 1 hr covering 48 miles and reaches (288-48=240) miles point to catch D who has covered 15*16=240 miles in 15 hours.
In last 16th hour, A and D covered 72 miles ( at faster speeeeeeeeeed)in 1 hr and all A,B,C,D reached on the other side at same time.

Based on this

boat travelled for all the time i.e. 14 hours(16-2) .. no doubt.
A swam for ZERO (0) hours.
D swam for 15 hours.
B was in boat for 5 hours.

Dear Admin,

Pls check sol of puzzle

a clock is such that it looses 4 min every day.the clock is set right on feb 25,2008 2 p.m.how many min should be added to get the right time when the clock shows 9 am on 3rd march 2008?

ans of caitanya accepted by Admin is

total no.of days between 25 FEB 2008 and 3rd MAR 2008 are 8 days(25,26,27,28,29,1,2,3 )

now total hours is 24*8=192hrs

for 1 day clock looses 4min.

so for 8 days clock looses 32min. (8x4=32)

For every 6hrs clock looses 1 min.

so total min lost until 9am of 3rd mar 2008 will be 31min.

So the time will be 1.29pm.

I think this solution is not correct.

total no.of days between 25 FEB 2008 and 3rd MAR 2008 are 8 days(25,26,27,28,29,1,2,3 )

No of days will be 7 and not 8 as calculated by Chaitanya.
day of 25th Feb should not be calculated.

Further if clock is loosing time, adjusted time should be more than actual time if qn asked is for mins to be added on feb 25,2008 2 p.m .
If time is to be adjusted at 9 am on 3rd march 2008, then time should be near 9 am on 3rd march 2008 and not near 2 PM.

Dear admin,
Pls check solution given by you

1st case all the letters are different
total no. of words of this category = 5*4*3*2*1 = 120
2nd case B comes twice and 3 others
total no. of words of this category = (4*3*2*1)*(5*4*3*2*1)/(2*1) = 240
so total words = 120+240 = 360

ans 360 is correct
but logic given seems incorrect.
as
total no. of words of this category = (4*3*2*1)*(5*4*3*2*1)/(2*1) is not equal to 240.

it should be
total no. of words of this category = 4*(5*4*3*2*1)/(2*1) = 240

Pls check the solution for puzzle

Total no. of words of 5 letters formed by letters of the word BOMBAY.
[You should use only 5 letters out of 6 letters of the word BOMBAY]

solution given is ..................
.....
(1st case all the letters are different
total no. of words of this category = 5*4*3*2*1 = 120
2nd case B comes twice and 3 others
total no. of words of this category = 5*4*3*2*1/2*1 = 60
so total words = 120+60 = 180)

I think answer should be 360
as
solution should be

1st case all the letters are different
total no. of words of this category = 5*4*3*2*1 = 120
2nd case B comes twice and 3 others
total no. of words of this category = 4*(5*4*3*2*1/2*1) = 60*4=240 because there will be 4 combinations of such words.
so total words = 120+240 = 360

pls excuse me if I am wrong.

Dear M4Maths, as specified, the unacceptable solution x = 3 in the given example is ok. But in mathematics, square root of a negative number exists. So, why is it unacceptable? On what grounds is that solution unacceptable??

Dear users
in some cases solutions become unacceptable
one such case is question given in 10th july
the secone such case -->
solve x/(x-3) = 3/(x-3)
on solving we get x=3
but for 3 denominator is undefined so x=3 is not considered as solution

1!+2!+3!+........+50! is divided by 5! then the remailnder is------------------?
a)3 b)33 c)13 d)93

all terms after 5! are fully divisible by 5!.
hence 1!+2!+3!+4! = 1+2+6+24 = 33
when 33 is divided by 5!(120), then we get 33 as remainder.

why not 7/9???????????????????????
I also didn't see any restriction that x-3 cannot be negative inside the square root.infact i expected this and i have even explained that taking 7/9, both sides will be having negative number inside the roots. ADMIN, plz check the reason i have submitted and provide me points.
