Plz help me in solving this riddle.....

A mythical city contains 100,000 married couples but no children. Each family wishes to "continue the male line", but they do not wish to over-populate. So, each family has one baby per annum until the arrival of the first boy. For example, if (at some future date) a family has five children, then it must be either that they are all girls, and another child is planned, or that there are four girls and one boy, and no more children are planned. Assume that children are equally likely to be born male or female.

Let p(t) be the percentage of children that are male at the end of year t. How is this percentage expected to evolve through time?

RAKESH   11 years ago
if half of them having a boy and half having a girl after 1st yr
after 2nd,3rd,4th yr
boys 50000,75000,87500,93750
girls 50000,75000,87500,93750
no. of boys & girls equalise.
p(t) will not depend on t
p(t)= 50%

I have used Chinese remainder theorem...
It is
If we want to calculate Remainder[M/N], where N=a*b, then we can split it into 2...
M mod a = r1
M nod b = r2
Here a nd b should be co-primes... Otherwise we can't use this theorem...
Then remainder = ax+r1 = by+r2...

Remainder[10!+111/143] , M=10!+111 , N=143 => 11*13... So a=11, b=13...
(10!+111) mod 11 = r1
(10!+111) mod 13 = r2
r1 => 10! mod 11 + 111 mod 11
Fermat's theorem => R[(p-1)!/p] = p-1 [where p is a prime no.]
R[10!/11] = 10
111 mod 1 = 1
So r1 = 10+1 mod 11 => 11 mod 11 = 0
so r1 = 0

Similarly r2 => (10! mod 13 + 111 mod 13)
6 + 7 mod 13
13 mod 13 = 0
r2 = 0

Remainder = ax+r1 = by+r2
11*x+0 = 13*y+0
x = 13*y/11
Substitute a value for "y" s that the result should be divisible by "11"... So y=11.. x=13...
Remainder = 11*13+0 = 13*11+0 => 143 mod 143
143 mod 143 = 0

Hence the remainder is 0...
Hope u understand this...

Three pipes, A, B, & C are attached to a tank. A & B can fill it in 20 & 30 minutes respectively while C can empty it in 15 minutes.
If A, B & C are kept open successively for 1 minute each, how soon will the tank be filled?
Reply Like? Yes (1) | No
Anwesha Banerjee   11 years ago
A can fill the tank in 20 min
then, in 1 min it can fill it by 1/20 .
& in 1 min B can fill it by 1/30 .
after 2 mins it will be filled by (1/20 + 1/30)= 1/12
now, C can empty the tank by 1/15 in 1 min
so, after 3 mins the remained water in the tank if A,B,C are kept open successively will be (1/12 - 1/15)= 1/60
so 1/60 part is filled in 3 mins
1 " " " " (60*3)=180 mins=3hrs

A man buys spirit at Rs. 60 per letter, adds water to it and then sells it at Rs. 75 per litter.
What is the ratio of spirit to water if his profit in the feal is 37.5%?
Reply Like? Yes | No (1)
Anwesha Banerjee   11 years ago
let spirit is X liters and added water is Y liters.
now, the cost price is 60X and selling price 75(X+Y).
so, profit is [75(X+Y) - 60X ]= 15(X + 5Y).
if cost price is 100 then profit 37.5
" " " " 60X " " [(37.5 * 60X)/100]=22.5X
so, 22.5X=15(X + 5Y)
then X:Y = 10:1
ratio of spirit to water is 10:1
Like? Yes (1) | No (1)
vijayvargi nikhtha   11 years ago
mean cost price =100/(100+37.5)* 75=600/11
cp of 1 litre of spirit cp of 1 litre of water
60 0
600/11
60/11 : 600/11
so 10:1

Two trains for Pune leave at 8:30 am and 9.00 am and travel at 60 and 70 km/hr respectively.How many km from Mumbai will be together?
Reply Like? Yes | No
MR. Bean   11 years ago
Suppose these trains will meet at distance Xkm. Let t be the time for Second train.
Distance covered by both train will be same= Xkm.
And First train will take half n hour more than second train.
First Train time = t+.5;
SO by Distance=speed*time
Since Distance is same for both trains so we can equate.
60*(t+.5)= 70*t
60t+30=70t
10t=30
t=3
So after 3 hours those train will meet.
Distance covered before met=70*3= 210Km.(From Pune)

Points A,B,C are at the distances of 120,104.66,112 km from point M simultaneously : the first person started from point A, the second man from B and the third from C. the first person covered the whole way at a constant speed and arrived at M an hour before the second and the third persons (who arrived simultaneously). The third person covered the whole distance at a constant speed. The second person having travelled 72 km at the same speed as the first, stopped for 2 hours. The rest of the way he travelled at a speed that is less than the speed of the third person by the same amount as the speed of the third is less than that of the first. Determine the speed of the first person.
A- 6km/h
B- 5km/h
C- 4km/h
D- 3km/h

One of the basic physice equation is d = rt, where d=distance, r=rate, and t=time.

d1=distance car from A travelled
d2=distance car from B travelled
rA=rate of car A
rB=rate of car B
t=time until they meet

To start out, they both get to some point at the same time.
The equations for this are d1 = t•rA and d2 = t•rB.

After meeting, car B took 16 more hours, so d1 = 16•rB.
After meeting, car A took 9 more hours, so d2 = 9•rA.

Take all four of these equation and put in d1/d2 = d1/d2 as follows: 16•rB/(9•rA) = t•rA/(t•rB).

Notet the first thing to do is cancel the t's, giving: 16•rB/(9•rA) = rA/rB.

Now cross multiply, giving: 16•rB² = 9•rA².

Take the squareroots of both sides, giving: 4•rB = 3•rA.

This says that car A is going 4/3 as fast as car B.

This means that it will take car (3/4)16 = 12 hours to start his leg and
car B (4/3)9 = 12 hours to start his leg. Since they are the same, that
puts them both at that meeting point at the same time.

From this, since it can be seen that B is slower, it will take car B 9 + 16 = 25 hours total.

On the banks of the river Ganga there are two bathing points in Varanasi and Patna. A diya left in the river at Varanasi, reaches Patna in 24 hours. However, a motorboat covers the whole way to and fro exactly in 10 hours. If the speed of the motorboat in still water is increased by 40 % , then it takes the motorboat 7 hours to cover the same way ( from Varanasi to Patna and back again). Find the time necessary for the motorboat to sail from Varanasi to Patna when the speed in still water is not increased.
(A) 3 hours
(B) 6 hours
(C) 12 hours
(D) 4 hours

Sri Reddy   11 years ago
Very Easy..
there would be 4 cases
1.Tayyab gets 3 choclates then the other can be distributed among
other 4 children in (12-1)C(4-1) ways ie 165 ways
2.Tayyab gets 4 choclates then the other 11 can be distributed among other children in (11-1)C(4-1) ways ie 120 ways
3.Tayyab gets 5 choclates then the other 10 can be distributed among other 4 children in (10-1)C(4-1) ways
4.Tayyab gets 6 choclates then the other 9 can be distributed among other 4 children in (9-1)C(4-1) ways ie 56 ways
adding above all cases we get 165+120+84+56=425 ways
hence answer is 425 ways.

3. 240:306 :: 380:??
Answer is 462
240:306 = (15^2 + 15) : (17^2 + 17)
380:? = (19^2 + 19) : (X^2 + X)..Following the pattern (21^2 + 21) == 462.

1.UE?MY
Answer is "E"
Group A-I into 3 A-I,J-R & S-Z numbered from 1-9,that is, (A-1),(B,2)...(E,5),(F,6),(G,7)..(I,9) & (J-1),(K-2),..(M-4)...(P-7),(Q-8),(R-9),&& (S-1),(T-2),(U-3),...(Y-7),(Z-8).
U E ? M Y == 3 5 ? 4 7...It can be grouped as (3,?,7) & (5,4).So the ans (3,5,7) can be E/N/W.Hence it is E(OPTION D)

2. QGFPM?
Answer is "Y"
Group A-I into 3 A-I,J-R & S-Z numbered from 1-9,that is, (A-1),(B,2)...(E,5),(F,6),(G,7)..(I,9) & (J-1),(K-2),..(M-4)...(P-7),(Q-8),(R-9),&& (S-1),(T-2),(U-3),...(Y-7),(Z-8).
Now Q G F P M ? == 8 7 6 7 4 ?... It can be grouped as (8,7), (6,7),(4,?). So the answer(4,7) can be G/P/Y. Hence the ans is Y(OPTION D)
