Rohan lends 10000rs in 4 parts. If he gets 8% interest on 2000rs, 15/2% on 4000rs and 17/2% on 1400rs. What percent of interest must he got for the remainder if his avg annual interest is 8.13% ?

a) 10% b)9 % c) 8% d) none I NEED COMPLETE SOLUTION PLS HELP ME

yagnik pandya   11 years ago
Ins is B.
explanation:
8% interest on 2000=160
15/2% interest on 4000=300
17/2% on 1400
So what is R for remaining rupees? ? Is to b found. ..
Total annual interest is 8.13% so total interest will be 813.
Now 160 +300+119=579
So 813 - 579 = 234
Now r can be found because I=234, p=2600, n=2600 by simple interest formula which is >> I = PRN/100
So u wiil get R = 9.
Hope my explanation would help you...

A woman is walking down a downward-moving escalator and steps down 10steps to reach the bottom. Just as she reaches the bottom of the escalator, a sale commences on the floor above. She runs back up the downward moving escalator at a speed five times that which she walked down. She covers 25 steps in reaching the top. How many steps are visible on the escalator when it is switched off?
Reply Like? Yes | No
Ann Theressa   11 years ago
Let s be the number of steps on the escalator.
Let a be the speed of escalator and b speed of woman.

The time while the woman moves down 10 steps equals the time that the
escalator moves s-10 steps.
(s-10)/a = 10/b ----(1)

Also the time that woman moves 25 steps equals the time that the escalator moves (25-s) steps.
(25-s)/a = 25/5b ----(2)

(1)/(2) gives
(s-10)/(25-s) = 2
Solving s = 20 steps

Mr. jones can get a raise for earning a master's degree. He calculates that, after getting the degree, it would take 10 years for the additional income to make up for the lost income of not working for two years while he earns the degree. As a percent of his original salary, how much of a raise would Mr. jones receive for earning his master's degree ?

SWARNA   11 years ago
Ans is 20% raise,
Let Original Salary=X ; Raise be Y
10 years =120 Months, 2yrs=24 months
120*y=24*x
Solving Y=20% of X

Dear Rakesh ,
I am again in confussion please slove it as early as possible

x^1/2 + y = 7
x + y^1/2 = 11

prove that x = 9 and y = 4
Reply Like? Yes (5) | No
RAKESH   11 years ago
√x + y = 7
x + √y = 11

√x + y = 7
=> x = (7-y)^2 = 49 + y^2 - 14y

x + √y = 11
=> y = (11-x)^2
=> y = (11 - 49 - y^2 + 14y)^2
=> y = (y^2 -14y +38)^2
=> y = y^4 + 196y^2 + 1444 -28y^3 -1064y + 76y^2
=> y^4 - 28y^3 + 272y^2 - 1065y + 1444 = 0
at y=4, above eqn satisfies
=> (y-4)*(y^3 -------) = 0
=> y = 4
so, x = 9
Like? Yes | No (2)
Akanksha Mishra   11 years ago
NO Rakesh we have to prove that x= 9 and y=4 ....
we can't satisfy any equation to put the value of x and y...
.imagine we don't know the original value of x and y ,now prove that
Like? Yes | No
RAKESH   11 years ago
for ex
we have to solve x^5 + x - 2 = 0
here we see that at x = 1 , above eqn satisfies
so, from remainder theorem, (x-1) is a factor of the eqn
now divide x^5 + x - 2 by (x-1)
=> (x-1)*(x^4 ---some terms) = 0
=> x = 1
the same thing i have done in the ans.

otherwise
x^1/2 + y = 7
x + y^1/2 = 11

let x = a^2 & y = b^2

a + b^2 = 7 & a^2 + b = 11
subtract
(a^2-b^2)+(b-a) = 4
=> (a-b)(a+b-1) = 4 = 1*4 = 2*2 = 4*1 (for integral values)

if a-b = 1 , a+b-1 = 4 => a = 3, b = 2
if a-b = 2 , a+b-1 = 2 => a = 5/2 , b = 1/2 doesn't satisfy eqn
if a-b = 4 , a+b-1 = 1 => a = 3 , b = 2

so, a = 3 , b = 2
=> x = 9 , y = 4

Abhishek   11 years ago
WHAT ARE BASIC RULES???

• Divide the time as: 45-50 minutes for Quant, 45-50 minutes for Reasoning and Last 25-30 Minutes for English(not even a single second Exrta for English)
• Start solving paper from either Quant or Reasoning as according to your preference and command over the subject/topics.
o Most of you, will be tempted to start the paper from English coz its the easiest one, but trust me... That ain't gonna help you.
• Then go to the next section remaining among Quant and Reasoning
• And at last in Last 25-30 minutes go for English.
HOW TO SOLVE EACH SECTION???
• REASONING:
o Don't even look at the first questions... just turn the page and come to the last question i.e Data Interpretation. It will be a lengthy question BUT it will have FOUR questions associated with it. So TAKE YOUR TIME(even 15-20 minutes) and solve it. Don't get panicked that "I am taking too much time to solve this??? What about other questions??? Should i try other ones???" NO!!! FOCUS AND SOLVE THE QUESTIONS... AND ALL FOUR OF THEM.
o Now Dont look at 4th question until unless you are quite( i mean QUITE) good at Crypt-Arithmetic, you will juss waste your Precious time in analyzing it... for those who have no idea about What is Crypt-arithmetic??? "SEND+MORE=MONEY" type questions, where you have to find the value of the Alphabets used in the given equations.
o After you have completed Data interpretation, Skip 4th one(Crypt-arithmetic) and come to 3rd question i.e. Data Sufficiency(ek se answer aa jayega...dono se aajegaa...dono se ni ayegaa type). There are four questions... among them if you try... will be easily able to solve 2-3 questions(20-25 minutes).
o Now you have Solved 4+2(atleast questions), what it means.... It means you have secured 50+ marks in Reasoning section i.e. 80+ Percentile in Reasoning. Quite easy na???? :)
o Don't waste time in looking at other questions in reasoning section..... mere buss ki to ni theee... baaki apki shradhaa!!!
• QUANTS:
o So till now you have completed 5+ question in Reasoning in 40-50 minutes... now its turn for Quant.
 Start from beginning:
 Read the question and decide weather you are able to solve it Right Now(coz its from the part in which you have stronghold, or from the topic which you have studied Previous Night :P) OR it will take some time you to solve it OR it is from the topic you have skipped/ no idea about the question.
 If it is First case-->> SOLVE IT AT THE MOMENT(Dont worry about time even if you take 8-10 minutes to solve a single question as long as you are sure that you are solving it Correctly)... and Tick mark the question.
 If it is Second case -->> Mark the circle on the question no. and move on to next question.... so that you can look at it in next round.
 And if it is Third case-->> Cross mark the question.. so that you do not waste(each second counts) your time in going through that again.
 By solving this way.... If you are able to solve 2-5 questions..... That is sufficient ... Trust me it is even more than juss sufficient...
 If You have solved 2+ questions(atleast) your score will be 20+ i.e. 60+ Percentile in Quants. Quite easy na??? :)
 CAUTION: Dont get Tempted to solve More then 8-10 questions(if you are too good in quants) else 5-7 questions are Enough.
• ENGLISH:
o Hmm... Done with quants and reasoning and time now remaining is around 25-30 minutes..... So get going... :)
o English is easiest part in elitmus.
o Start from first question...... and when you reach Paragraph based questions, SELECT TWO FROM THE GIVEN THREE WHICH ARE SMALLER IN CONTENT.
o That's the only key in English part... choose wisely coz you wont have that much time to solve the third one, in case you manage to get some extra time go for the third Para too.
o So around 12-16 questions in will be enough.
o With 12+ questions you will have 100+ score i.e. 90+ or 93+ percentile in English section .
So All in all you have got now:
• 5+ question in quant
• 5+ in reasoning
• 10+ in English
Means you got 80+ and 60+ and 90+ percentile SO YOUR OVERALL ELITMUS PERCENTILE IS 90+ AS PROMISED ;)

CAUTION: I repeat Don't get Tempted to solve More questions, coz negative marking will impact your percentile very badly.

Books and Tricks suggested for preparation(On Public Demand :P )
Quant: Abhijeet Guha for basics, and then go for Quantitative CAT (Arun Sharma).
Reasoning: Logical Reasoning CAT(Arun Sharma)
Verbal: Do practice of Paragraphs and Sequence based question. For grammar "Which Feels Right Is Right :P "... And for word meaning/antonym/synonym.... Juss one day before exam "take a quick Scan of 200+ words".... If you are Lucky you might get one of them over there in test... and as you have scanned once, jss last night... you will be able to "Guess the right choice :D "

That's all about how to score 90+ percentile in ELITMUS. Hope this will be helpful in your preparation. Best wishes. :)(:

Welcome friends :)

These four posts(Second one The Trick being the KEY post) are for all those who are preparing for ELITMUS and also will help you in resolving some of your queries regarding Preparation, Result, Percentile, Chances of getting Interview Calls, Right time we should go for Elitmus...etc. Before i start giving tips on "How to get 90+ percentile in ELITMUS" ... i think it will be good to give a brief introduction about ELITMUS.

WHAT IS ELITMUS???

Elitmus is a reputed "Bicholiya" i.e. Middle Layer between JOB SEEKERS(we :p) and JOB PROVIDERS(Companies mostly IT Sector related). It is an organization which organizes APTITUDE TEST, basic hiring process(first hurdle in getting job).

Companies get benifitted coz their overhead of selecting suitable candidate is being taken care by elitmus.

We, students get benefited coz we get a platform where we can showcase our caliber and thus gets noticed by job providers(companies)

Elitmus is getting benefited coz......coz of course they are charging both the parties for the SERVICE they are providing.

Soooo.........Everyone is getting benefited... a win win situation :)

HOW IT WORKS???

Its quite simple......Following are the steps:
• Give ELITMUS exam.
• Get good percentile.
• Get calls for interview from companies.
• Crack the interview and get the job.
Told you.... its quite simple!!! ;-)

SCHEDULE, PATTERN AND SYLLABUS???

Elitmus organizes the exam in various cities all over INDIA. Go to ELITMUS WEBSITE register and then select the Date and Place where you want to attend the exam. After that make payment. Once payment is done you will receive your call letter 1-2 days prior to the date of exam on the email id you have provided during registration.

Paper contains three sections:
• Quantitative aptitude(20 questions)
o Questions from Time and Distance, Work, Average, Percentage, Profit Loss, Geometry, Probability, Permutation and Combination, Number System, Algebra
• Reasoning aptitude (20 questions)
o Divided in 5 parts: Data sufficiency, Crypt-arithmetic, Data interpretation, Logical deductions based relational questions(2).
• English(20 questions)
o 3 passage, 2 fill in the blanks, 2 find the proper sequence of sentence, 2 word meaning etc.
Time given to solve the whole paper 2 hours.

Books for preparation: Quantitative CAT Arun Sharma.... Time ya kisi bhi CAT level ka matter le lo.Prepare from any CAT preparation book.

As the post is getting to Lengthy... so i am breaking the topic into two posts. Here is the link of Final post explaining "How to get 90+ percentile in ELITMUS"
Must go through--->>>The Trick...
Update no. one ON DEMAND: If you have any Queries go through Second Last post of this blog dedicated to FAQ's--->> Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ's)
Update no. two ON DEMAND:As many of you keep on asking about Overall Percentile... Please Refer this Last post -->> Estimating Overall Percentile

Best wishes for exam.... Be calm during exam.. coz no matter how great you have practiced, your result Always depends upon "Whether you are able to hold your nerve during exam or not" :)

Jssss....... believe YOU CAN DO IT.... :)(:

a-x represent in the form of 1/a^x so even if u increase x value linearly then 1 divided by positive number power linear increased value should be linearly decreased........ex:-x=1,2,......,a=2 and for x=1 result 1/a^x=1/2^1=0.5 and for x=2,1/a^x=1/2^2=1/4=0.25 so there is linear decrease of a^-x value

7 Women

If 1 day work of 1 Man, 1 Woman & 1 Children is (1/M) , (1/W) & (1/C) respectively
Then 1 day work of 3 Men, 4 Women & 6 Children =(3/M)+(4/W)+(6/C)= 1/7 -----(i)
Given women does double the work a man, so (2/M)=(1/W) or 1/M =1/2W ----(ii) and
child does half the work a man, so (1/2M) =1/C ,so from (ii), (1/C)=(1/4W) ---(iii)
Eqn. (i) becomes, (3/2W)+(4/W)+(6/4W)= 1/7 , On solving, W=49
1 Woman can complete the work in 49 days
So to complete the work in 7 days 49/7= 7 women are required.

the avg of five natural numbers is 150.a particular number among five exceeds another by 100.the rest 3 numbers are lie between these two numbers and they are equal.how many different values can the largest number among five can take?
Reply Like? Yes | No
Devendra Marghade   11 years ago
19

Total of all five numbers, a,b,c,d & e= 150*5= 750
If 'e' is the largest number & 'a' is the smallest number, then e-a= 100
As all other three numbers are same say= 'b' ,then
a+b+b+b+e= 750 ---(i) or (e-100)+3b+e=750 or 2e+3b=850
So e=(850-3b)/2 ----(ii)
'b' can take even values between 130 to 170
For b=130, e=230, a=130
For b=132, e=227, a=127
.
.
.
For b=168, e=173, a=73
For b=170, e=170, a=70
So for 'b' to be middle value between 'a' & 'e' , 'e' can take value 173, 176, 179,......., 227
Finding the number of 'n' values of 'e' , 227= 173+(n-1)3 , n=19

Find the maximum slope of the curve
f(x) = 2x + 3x^2 - x^3 - 27
Can u suggest me y are we taking f''(x) = 0 and when should we take three step f'''(x) plz clarify the concept i'm confused ...
Reply Like? Yes (1) | No
Anurag Kumar Singh   11 years ago
Hi Akanksha,

f'(x) = -3x^2 + 6x + 2
now for slope of f(x) to be maximum, the value of f'(x) must me maximum.
so, f'(x) is a quadratic equation with curve bent downwards. So, the local maxima will be the global also.
now, calc f''(x) = 0.
you get the point of global maxima and hence the ans.....

slope of f(x) is maximum at x = 5.

plz tell me if not understood.

f(x) = 2x + 3x^2 - x^3 - 27

to find slope of a function f(x) find f'(x)
slope = f'(x) = 2 + 6x - 3x^2 = g(x) let

now we have to find maxm of g(x)
g'(x)= 0 gives the point of maxm/minm
if g''(x) > 0 then g(x) has mimm
if g''(x) < 0 then g(x) has maxm

f''(x) = (6 - 6x) = 0 => x = 1

f'''(x) = -6 < 0 => f'(x) has a maxm at x = 1

maxm slope = f'(1)= 2 + 6 - 3 = 5

If 5/x+6y=13 and 3/x+4y=7, find the value of y?
Reply Like? Yes (1) | No
Saraswathy   11 years ago
5/x + 6y = 13
3/x + 4y = 7
Lets take a=1/x... Then the 2 eqns ll become
5a + 6y = 13 --->(1)
3a + 4y = 7 --->(2)
(1) - (2) =>
2a + 2y - 6 = 0 => a + y - 3 = 0
a = 3 - y
5(3 - y) + 6y = 13
15 - 5y + 6y = 13
y = -2
a = 3 - y => 3 - (-2) => a = 5
1/x = 5 => x = 1/5

Ans : X = 1/5, Y = -2

A man has to pay 975rs in yearly instalments and each instalment is less than the earlier one by 5rs. The amount of first instalment is 100rs. In what time the entire amount will be paid?

a)15 b)12 I need complete solution pls help me
Reply Like? Yes (1) | No
Saraswathy   11 years ago
First installment = 100
sec ll be 95, third ll be 90 nd so on...
So 100+95+90+85+.... = 975
a = 100, d=-5, Sn=975,
Sn=n[2a+(n-1)*d)/2
975 = n[2(100)+(n-1)*(-5)]/2
n^2 - 41n + 390 = 0
Solving the above eqn ll give n=15 (or) n=26...
Given options are 15 nd 12... So n value is 15...

Ans : (a) 15

The radius of a circle is 13cm and AB is a chord which is at a distance of 12cm from the centre. The length of the chord is?

a) 10cm b) 8cm
Reply Like? Yes | No
Saraswathy   11 years ago
AB is a chord...
Let O be the center of circle nd M be the mid-point of the chord AB...
Then OM = 12cm, OB = 13cm, AM=MB , AB=AM+MB
Apply Pythagoras theorem
(OB)^2 = (OM)^2+(MB)^2
(MB) ^2 = (OB)^2-(OA)^2
(MB)^2 = (13)^2 - (12)^2 => 169-144 = 25
MB = 5
AB = 5+5=10

Ans : (a) 10cm

A black monkey is climbing a 200m tall building. It starts from the ground, climbs 4m in the 1st second, slips 2m in the 2nd second, climbs 6m in the 3rd second, then slips 2m in the fourth , climbs 8m in the 5th second, slips 2m in the next & so on when would reach the top of the building ?
Reply Like? Yes (1) | No
Devendra Marghade   11 years ago
in 27th second
From above explanation we can develop a series like, 4-2+6-2+8-2+10-2+...............=200
Grouping the terms (4-2)+(6-2)+(8-2)+(10-2)+.........=200
2+4+6+8+10+........=200,
Arithmetic series Sum =(n/2)[2a+(n-1)d], Herea=2,d=2,
So (n/2)[2*2+(n-1)2]=200, n^2+n-200=0, n=13.65
As the above group of terms is repeated in alternate 1 second, so at 13.65*2 ~ 27th sec. total 200 m. will be covered

There are few benches and some number of students in class. if three students are seated in each bench,all the benches are filled but one student is left. if four students are seated in each bench then all the students are seated but one bench is left. how many benches are there and how many students are there?
Reply Like? Yes | No
Devendra Marghade   11 years ago
5 benches & 16 students
If number of benches= b
When 3 students are seated in each bench & 1 is left, number of students=3b+1
When 4 students are seated in each bench & 1 bench is left, number of students=4(b-1)
As number of students are same in both the cases: 3b+1=4(b-1) ,b=5
So number of students=3b+1 or 4(b-1) =16

Ann Theressa   11 years ago
Let the money spend by teachers be 't', engineers be 'e', doctors be 'd' and salesmen be 's'
25t + 20e + 18d + 12s = 1330 -----(1)
5 teachers spent as much as 4 engineers
5t = 4e
t = 4/5 *e ----(a)
12 engineers spent as much as 9 doctors
12e = 9d
d= 4/3*e ----(b)
6 doctors spent as much as 8 salesmen
6d = 8s
s = 3/4*d = 3/4*4/3*e = e ----(c)
Substituting these values in eqn (1)
25*4/5*e + 20e + 18*4/3*e + 12e = 1330
20e + 20e +24e + 12e = 1330
76e = 1330
e = Rs.17.5

In a dark room with no equipments other than a clock,you are given a pendulum.how can you measure your height now?
Reply Like? Yes (4) | No
~Sandeep~   11 years ago
Use formula s = ut+1/2 at^2
s= Height from which pendulum ball is freely dropped
u=Initial velocity, it would be 0 when dropped freely
t=time taken to reach ground
a=gravitation pull = 9.81 m/s2

So you need to start counting time using clock as soon as you drop the pendulum ball from your head in standing position & stop it the time when i reaches ground (when you hear the sound it hitting ground ). This will give you t.
Putting in formula Height = 1/2*g*t^2
You should get the answer
Like? Yes (4) | No
bhanu saileela   11 years ago
Time period of pendulum is given by 2*3.14*(sqrt(height of rope/gravity)).
gravity=g=9.81
using clock you can find the time period of pendulum.(average time for 1 oscillation).using the formula from time period you can measure the heigth of the rope. Then using the rope you can measure your own height.

@sravya thanks for answer
but m not able to understnd why u r taking number f terms 120 while applying A.P.bcz
3(1,2) is made up of two terms
5(1,2,2) is made up of three terms
7(1,2,2,2) is made up of four terms
thus 3,5,7 consists of 9 terms thus resulting sequence which forms an A.P. will not have 1230 terms but will have some less number of terms
Reply Like? Yes | No
sravya   11 years ago
ok..i too thought the same..some less terms will come..
ok now what is the ans..is 2461 crct..?

sravya   11 years ago
@naina..ya i said one is wrong..no of terms will be reduced....so,this mthd i have solved.....
1 2 1 2 2 1 2 2 2 1 2 2 2 2 1 2 ......
=(1+2),(1+2+2),(1+2+2+2),(1+2+2+2+2)......
if N be no. of terms then
N=(1+1)+(1+2)+(1+3)+(1+4)+...
N= n+ n(n+1)/2 = (n^2+3n)/2
now (n^2+3n)/2 = 1230 => n^2+3n=2460
if n=48, (n^2+3n)=2448 & N=2448/2=1224
so series will be
sum of (1224 term + 6 term)
[(1+2)+(1+2+2)+(1+2+2+2)+(1+2+2+2+2)+...+(1+2+2...48 times 2)]+(1+2+2+2+2+2)
so no. of 1's in series=49
no. of 2's in series=(1230-49)=1181

sum of series= 49*1+1181*2 = 49+2362=2411

ans 2411

assume that 1kg sugar=10rs
given that,
overall profit =17%
17% of 500=85
then 50kg sugar=50*10=500

given 15% on one part =30kg=30*10/kg=300rs
15%of 300=45/-
the remaining part=20kg
20%of 200=40/-
total=30kg+20kg=15% of 300+20% of 200=45+40=85

so one part=30kg and remaining part=20kg

Use alligation rule
15 20
17
3 2
so the ratio is 15:20=3:2
(3/5)*50=30

5*5=25-4/2=23
8*8=64-1/1=63
6*6=36-16/4=32
9*9=81-9/3=78
3*3=9-9/3=6
so
3*3=9-81/9=0
so,0 is d ans

5/6th of the way across a narrow railroad bridge, Anoop hears a train coming towards him. He knows that the train's speed is 35 miles per hour and that he has just enough time to reach safety at either end of the bridge. How fast can Anoop run (in miles per hour)?

a cloth merchant says that due to the slump in the market ,he sells the cloth at 10% loss but he uses a false meter scale and actually gains 15%.find the actual length of the scale?

Devendra Marghade   11 years ago
0.782 m.

If usual Quantity & Price of cloth is 100 m. & Rs 100/ m. respectively.
Total amount received from the sell=100*100=10000 Rs.
With 10% decrease in price,if quantity to be sell more is 'x' for getting 15% profit, then
100x*(100-10)=10000*(115/100), x=115/90=23/18
As quantity is to be remained same so scale is to be reduced to 18/23=0.782 m.
