The sum of reciprocal of two numbers is 0.45 and the sum of reciprocal of their squares is 0.1025, then value of the numbers are

Solution

Let the numbers are x and y
According to the given conditions
(1/x) + (1/y) = 0.45
And (1/x2) + (1/y2) = 0.1025
On solving these two equations , we get the two values 4 and 5

Suppose Two numbers are x and y and its reciprocals
are 1/x and 1/y
According to the question

1/x + 1/y = 0.45------(1)

1/x^2 + 1/y^2 = 0.1025-----(2)

According to 1st equation
1/4 + 1/5 = 0.45

According to 2nd equation
1/4^2 + 1/5^2 = 0.1025
So x = 4
y = 5

and (1/x^2+1/y^2)=0.1025
from (1/x+1/y)^2=1/x^2+1/y^2+2/xy
so, 0.2025=0.1025+0.9/(x+y)
it gives x+y=9
by solving first equation it gives xy=20
so, the answer is 4 and 5...

now (a-b)^2 = (a+b)^2 - 4ab
= 0.2025 - 4(0.05)
= 0.0025
a-b = 0.05
a+b=0.45
a-b=0.05
from above equations we get a=0.25 and b =0.2
so a= 1/x =0.25 ==> x= 4
b=1/y = 0.2 ===> y=5

If two numbers are a & b
Given,(1/a)+(1/b)=0.45, a+b/(ab)=0.45 or
a+b=0.45ab --(i)
Also (1/a^2)+(1/b^2)=0.1025, or
a^2+b^2=0.1025(a^2)(b^2) --(ii)
From (i),(a+b)^2=(0.45ab)^2
a^2+b^2+2ab=0.2025(a^2)(b^2)
Substituting value of a^2+b^2 from (ii)
0.1025(a^2)(b^2)+2ab=0.2025(a^2)(b^2)
ab=20
Solution can be either (2,10) or (4,5)
(a,b)=(4,5) satisfies the above condition.

we get 0.1025+(2/ab)= (0.45*0.45)
(2/ab)= 0.2025-0.1025
(1/ab)=(0.1/2)

--> a=(20/b) , substitute this in eqn(1)
(b/20)+(1/b)=0.45
=> b*b - 9*b + 20=0
=>b*b- 5b-4b+20=0

given that 85 meter wire is used to cover a rectangular plot ,this means that perimeter of rectangular plot is give.
we know that,perimeter of rectangle is 4l.
therefore, 4l=85
or, l=85/4 =21.25 meter
now,maximum possible area of rectangular plot is equal to l*l=(21.25)*(21.25)=451.5625 sq. meter.
Thus, our answer is 451.5625 which is option (2)

a^2 + b^2 = [(a+b)^2 + (a-b)^2]/2
